Celebrating Conservation Week

Posters from Conservation Week 1993
A wonderful way to start Conservation Week - a mystery parcel arrived from a friend and in it were these posters from Conservation Week 1993. They've been on classroom walls and in children's bedrooms and now they've come to rest in my study.

Sea Week - At the Beach

Sea Week is on - with events around the country. Sea Week is run by the NZ Association for Environmental Education, so has a schools focus.
But that shouldn't stop the rest of us making the most of Sea Week at the beach - or at home.

Conservation Week 2013

Facebook cover image - Sirocco, Conservation Week.

So 8-15 September is Conservation week. I'm thinking - just one week to get out and make a difference, that's not enough!

Venture into the unknown with Auckland Museum's Moana - My Ocean exhibition

Wet and cold outside? Immerse yourself and the kids in the ocean without getting wet. Auckland Museum has a fabulous exhibition Moana - My Ocean on until 28 October.

My favourite part of the exhibition was the 3D video from Leigh Marine Reserve.

See Sirocco the kākāpō

If you live in or near Wellington, here is a great opportunity to get up close to a kākāpōSiroccolandia: return of the kākāpō, with Alfie Kākā | Zealandia: The Karori Sanctuary Experience

I went to see Sirocco at Zealandia last year. It was a great experience to see for yourself how large these gorgeous birds are. Sirocco's keeper had a lot of interesting things to tell us too. The visits are all in the evening because kākāpō are nocturnal birds. It was enjoyable visiting the sanctuary at night. As we walked along to Sirocco's enclosure we heard the kiwi and morepork calling, which was a treat in itself.
